The Thing Is

Sullivan & Flint

Thursday 2nd August
Performance: 7:00pm
Doors Open: 6:30pm

It's our final show before Autumn so we're having a party! Have a drink on us, watch the performance from Sullivan & Flint and help us welcome Summer Residency artist Owen Clarke.

We are delighted to welcome back our 2011 artists in residence Christine Sullivan and Rob Flint! Marking the begininng of a new tradition of former residents opening the next summer residency, Sullivan and Flint will be performing their new work The Thing Is.

Following recent work using the human voice as a descriptive and transformative tool, Christine Sullivan and Rob Flint present another action/event where live description is a substitute for the visual spectacle of the artwork.

In a world where screens increasingly divide our experience between physical presence and mediated absence, this is an experiment with their attention, and with yours.

Sitting in a synthetically cocooned gallery space watching two different versions of the classic horror movie ‘The Thing’ on video glasses, the artists will describe their experience as it takes place. Watching the films for the first time, each describes their specific movie in parallel at opposite ends of the space, while the audience move freely between them, assembling a second-hand narrative from re-told stories separated by three decades.

In a further excessive reiteration, their actions will be broadcast by Nottingham-based art collective ‘Tether’, whose current 'Tethervision' project at Nottingham space Primary is a critical collaborative exploration of the relationship between an event and it's documentation.
