BLACK RAINBOW

Made up of artists living and working in Bristol, InterCity MainLine is a new Arts Council England funded bi-monthly publication, reflecting on and collaborating with different artist-led initiatives across the UK. For Black Rainbow we will be showcasing the work of 5 group members at Motorcade / FlashParade with a supporting text from Marie-Anne McQuay. In addition we will be both launching Issue # 3, the Birmingham Issue and in place of any individual artists' statements or texts, the ICML members will be performing individual Pecha Kuchas on the evening Friday 18th December, 7pm.

"Drawing its name from the Japanese term for the sound of "chit chat", it rests on a presentation format that is based on a simple idea: 20 images x 20 seconds. It's a format that makes presentations concise, and keeps things moving at a rapid pace."

Motorcade/FlashParade, BV Studios, Philip Street, Bristol, BS3 4DR

Motorcade/FlashParade presents VICE VERSA a group show culminating from a
series of exchanges between eleven artists from Bristol, UK and Groningen, Holland.

Over the course of a year exchange visits have been made to share working
practices, debate and conversation, with collaborative group shows in each city. In
November Bristol will host VICE VERSA alongside a dynamic programme of
workshops, talks and a public seminar. The seminar, to be held at the Spike Island
Associates Space, will address associated values of swapping or replacing, giving
and receiving, and the sharing of knowledge or experience to produce change.
Discussions and debate will explore the practical experience of exchange between
artists from different countries, why we choose to create these relationships and what
impact they can have on our practice.

VICE VERSA includes new work made specifically for the Motorcade/FlashParade
gallery. The artists work with a range of media, strategies and tactics including
photography, painting, performance, appropriation and installation. Site specificity is
confronted and reflected through recycled and manipulated local natural materials
whilst other works reinterpret the gallery context, creating a sense of encounter and
dissonance. The persistent interest in materials oscillates between seductive beauty
and a disquieting fascination.

VICE VERSA concludes a year’s exploration of exchange in which collaboration and
individuality have played important parts. The conversations begun in the gallery may
be continued and debated long after the public seminar finishes.

Associated events:
VICE VERSA Public Seminar, 21 November 2009, Saturday 10.30am – 4.00pm

MOTORCADE & COLLABORATION_

Opening/preview - Fri 23 Oct 6.30pm
Exhibition open - 24 Oct - 1 Nov (Fri-Sun 12-6pm or by appointment)

The Idea: Artists from Munich showing their work in other cities and inviting artists from those cities to come present their work in Munich.

COLLABORATION_ is a non profit exhibiting project created by seven Artists living and working in Munich. Who, with the help of different regional, national and international galleries and showrooms, will organize the exchange of artists.

The first exchange of this project will take place with the above artists in April 2009. They will be presenting their work in the International Austellungsraum at doppel_de in Dresden. The invitation for Dresden artists to present theirwork in Munich follows in the summer of 2009. A project room in the Tanzshule on Auenstrasse and also the gallery k4 on Klenzestrasse in Munich will be open for these Artists.

The free project COLLABORATION_ would lilke to strengthen the cultural exchange between Munich and other parts of Germany as well as the rest of Europe and even beyond that. At the same time they would like to create an open Forum for the respective cities they would be visiting outside of Bavaria.

Under the project name COLLABORATION_, the artists understand something about working together. The Achievment comes with actingas a group for the exhibition. The advantages of one person, such as his or her individual network of friends, can be a great support for the entire group. COLLABORATION_, through its development, would make it possible for other artists and also curators to become a part of the project and to carry it on.

Locations planned so far:

COLLABORATION_1, doppel de, Dresden (2009)
COLLABORATION_2, plan9, Bristol, UK (2009/10)
